A man and a woman in their 50s died hours after the car they were riding in crashed in Shefford Friday night.
The victims were found after the Sûreté du Québec was informed that a vehicle struck a tree after it had somehow swerved off Route 243, also known as Foster Road, and rolled over several times at around 8 p.m.
The woman, who was driving, was found lying on the ground near the vehicle and the man was found pinned inside it.
SQ spokesperson Sgt. Claude Denis said the victims were alive and in critical condition when they were taken to a hospital but both died hours later. He said the couple were from Shefford, a township municipality located 120 kilometres southeast of Montreal that has a population of more than 6,700.
“It is still too early to say exactly what caused the car to swerve off the road but the Sûreté du Québec is investigating it with the coroner’s office,” Denis said.
Highway 243 in Shefford is expected to be closed for several hours on Saturday to allow police to investigate the accident.
