A spokesperson for the Montreal police Brotherhood has confirmed that the union and the city have been involved in contract negotiations since Tuesday and plan to continue the process throughout the weekend.
The union, which represents more than 4,500 members, has been involve in lengthy disputes over a few issues in recent years, most notably over changes to pensions. Negotiations fell apart in December 2014 when the provincial government introduced Bill 15, adopting legislation that would allow municipalities to demand that city employees increase their contributions to pension plans.
The stalemate has touched off several high profile protests since 2014 include one stage earlier this month while the city was celebrating Montreal’s 375th birthday.
