A Vaudreuil-Dorion resident who was shot by the Montreal police on New Year’s Eve faces new charges in connection with an attempted murder carried out in Montreal last spring.

Lindel Darling, 24, has yet to recover enough to appear in court on a series of charges that have been filed at the Montreal courthouse since he was shot on Dec. 31. The shooting happened downtown at around 3 a.m. at the corner of de Bullion St. and René-Lévesque Blvd. Quebec’s Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes, the provincial police-oversight agency, said Montreal police were responding to a fight happening outside a bar in the area when they noticed that one of the men involved was carrying a gun. They alleged that someone fired shots toward police and they fired back, striking Darling at least once.

On Jan. 25, charges were filed at the Montreal courthouse alleging that on Dec. 31, Darling was in possession of a restricted weapon and that he pointed a firearm at another person. He was under a court order not to possess or carry weapons and to be at his residence between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. The condition was part of an overall six-year sentence Darling received, in 2014, for his role in a shooting in 2010 that wounded three people during a house party in Hudson, including a man who was shot in the mouth.

The charges filed at the Montreal courthouse on Friday allege that, on April 30, Darling conspired with two other men — Kiefea Mills-Walker, 25, of Brossard, and Patrick Mills Walker, 29, of Brampton, Ont., “to commit an indictable offence.” They are also charged with the attempted murder of a man named Haboullahi Mohamed Husein on April 30 in Montreal. A third charge alleges the three men tried to wound Husein by discharging a firearm.

The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes does not comment on the health status of the victims of the police shootings they are investigating. It is unclear when Darling is expected to recover enough to appear in court. He was described as being in critical condition in the hours after he was shot.
