The U.S. fugitive who was once considered America’s most prolific marijuana producer will remain in Montreal a little while longer after requesting a hearing to have him removed from Canada be delayed for two weeks.

As usual, John Robert Boone, 73 (aka the Godfather of Grass), said little during a hearing before the Immigration and Refugee Board held at Complexe Guy Favreau on Friday. But this time, Boone’s silence was attributable to a technical problem with the video linkup between the Rivière des Prairies Detention Centre, where he is being held, and the IRB hearing room.

“That’s okay. He doesn’t need to talk,” Boone’s lawyer for the removal hearing told IRB member Dianne Tordorf before the hearing started.

According to what is known so far, Boone has told authorities little about how he ended up in Quebec. His arrest in Montreal on Dec. 23 ended a search that began eight years ago, when Boone was indicted for having allegedly grown 2,500 marijuana plants on a farm he owned in Kentucky. When the Kentucky State Police made the discovery, on May 27, 2008, Boone was long gone.

Boone’s lawyer for the hearing said Boone wants to see a doctor at the detention centre Jan.16 before he proceeds with the hearing. The lawyer also informed Tordorf she is having difficulty finding a lawyer in the U.S. interested in taking his case.

The admissibility hearing is now scheduled for Jan. 26.
